What is crawl budget?

Crawl budget is how many of your pages a search engine will crawl in a given time. Here is when it matters and how to protect it.

Crawl budget is how many of your pages a search engine will crawl in a given window of time.

Bots do not crawl every page every day. On big or slow sites, some pages get crawled rarely, or missed. For most small sites it is a non-issue.

Think of it this way: How much attention Google's crawler spends on your site before moving on.

When it matters

  • Large sites. Thousands of URLs compete for limited crawls.
  • Lots of junk. Duplicate or low-value URLs waste the budget.
  • Slow servers. Each slow response means fewer pages crawled.

How to protect it

  • Block junk URLs. Use robots.txt to keep crawlers off low-value paths.
  • Fix errors. Clear redirect chains and broken links that drain crawls.
  • Keep a clean sitemap. Point crawlers straight at the pages that matter.

Frequently asked questions

Should I worry about crawl budget?

Most small sites should not. It mainly matters for large sites with thousands of URLs or sites with lots of low-value pages wasting crawls.

How do I improve crawl budget?

Block low-value URLs in robots.txt, fix redirect chains and broken links, keep a clean sitemap, and make sure your server responds quickly.

Does crawl budget affect rankings?

Indirectly. If important pages are crawled rarely or missed, they cannot rank well, so protecting it helps your best content stay fresh in the index.
