Getting named in ChatGPT's answers is the AI-era version of ranking first, and it follows similar rules.
AIs pull from sources they can read and trust. Being clear, credible and well-cited is how you get picked.
1. Answer questions directly
Write clear, self-contained answers an AI can lift without context. Lead with the answer, then explain.
2. Build authority and mentions
Earn links and brand mentions across trusted sites. AIs favour sources that others reference.
3. Show up on Reddit and forums
AIs lean heavily on community discussion. A genuinely helpful presence gets you surfaced.
4. Use clean structure and schema
Headings, lists and structured data make pages easy to parse. Easy to parse means easy to quote.
5. Cover the topic fully
Depth signals expertise. The more completely you answer a topic, the likelier you are the cited source.
Check access: OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search crawling separately from GPTBot training access. A Google featured snippet does not guarantee a ChatGPT citation.
What trips people up
- Writing for keywords, not questions. AIs answer questions; match how people ask.
- Thin, scattered content. AIs cite the clearest, most complete source.
- Treating mentions as guarantees. Outside coverage can help people discover you, but it does not ensure an AI recommendation.
