ChatGPT search can cite public web pages. Improve the page for readers, make it accessible to search crawlers, and measure citations separately from brand mentions.
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, then explain. AIs grab the top of a section.
- Make headings the real questions. "How much does X cost?" beats a heading that just says "Pricing".
- Use lists and small tables. They're the easiest thing for a model to copy cleanly.
- Keep each chunk self-contained. A section should make sense on its own, because that's how it gets pulled out.
- Check search access. OAI-SearchBot handles ChatGPT search discovery; GPTBot handles model-training crawling. These controls are independent. For Claude search, review Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User. An llms.txt file is optional and is not a citation requirement.
These practices improve accessibility and clarity, but no page format guarantees citations. Check a consistent sample of relevant prompts, record the tool and date, and verify each cited URL.
