ChatGPT Advertiser API Keys vs Conversions API Keys

Map each credential to its job, distinguish authorization from feature access, and prepare a useful escalation without exposing secrets.

Connected pastel cards with a key, nodes and padlock symbolize API access and permissions.

Use an Advertiser API key for the advertising-management workflow and a Conversions API key for server-side event delivery. Before troubleshooting either, identify the intended account, the operation and the destination. A valid credential for one job is not evidence that another job is authorized or enabled.

Reviewed October 15, 2026. This independent GPTAd guide is a diagnostic framework, not an account-tested installation tutorial. Availability and permissions must be checked in the actual account. No real tokens belong in this worksheet, support screenshots or browser code.

Make a credential-purpose map

OpenAI's Advertiser API overview covers campaign management and reporting, describes creating its key in Ads Manager Settings, and requires server-side storage. Its account-read example uses the advertising API's account endpoint to verify the associated account.

The Conversions API documentation describes server-to-server events using a CAPI key and Pixel ID. It documents provisioning through the Conversions tab, with a separate route for approved API partners. The Pixel ID identifies the destination data source; it does not replace the credential.

Create two inventory records, even if the same developer maintains both:

  • Management integration: business purpose, advertiser account, authorized operations, deployment owner, secret-manager reference and last verification date.
  • Event producer: business event, advertiser account, Pixel ID, CAPI secret-manager reference, producer owner and last approved validation.

Add environment and region where relevant to your infrastructure, plus the person authorized to approve changes. Store references to secrets rather than their contents. Use descriptive placeholders such as MANAGEMENT_SECRET_REFERENCE and EVENTS_SECRET_REFERENCE in internal examples.

This separation also helps procurement. A vendor that sends events does not automatically need campaign-editing access. Ask which operation actually requires each requested permission.

Check the smallest useful fact first

For a management integration, have an authorized developer perform the documented read-only account verification and compare the returned account identity with the approved inventory. Do not create a campaign just to see whether a key works.

For event delivery, inspect the configured destination, Pixel ID and secret reference before sending anything. Confirm that staging and production have not been crossed. Use the documented validation-only facility when checking a properly constructed test payload; successful validation does not establish attribution or production delivery.

For the broader measurement design, follow the Pixel and CAPI ownership checklist. Credentials solve access, while event definitions solve what the system is supposed to report. Neither substitutes for the other.

Separate credential failure from feature availability

OpenAI's API partner setup guide identifies account enablement checks for brand updates, pixel management, CAPI-key creation and conversion bidding. It documents specific 403 or 404 responses for these conditions, plus a missing-data-source error when a referenced source is absent from the current account.

Do not respond to every failure by generating another secret. Use this diagnostic order:

  1. Destination: is the request going to the documented API and operation?
  2. Identity: does the authorized account read establish the expected advertiser?
  3. Configuration: does the running service load the intended secret reference, without printing its value?
  4. Resource scope: does the referenced campaign or data source belong to that account?
  5. Enablement: does the exact error match a documented feature restriction?
  6. Request contract: are method, required fields and payload shape correct?

Keep the evidence for each conclusion. “Key is broken” is a hypothesis; a redacted error and verified account identity are useful findings. Avoid interpreting one status code as universal proof of a particular cause.

Build a redacted escalation packet

A useful support request lets someone reproduce the issue without receiving your credentials or customer records. Prepare:

  • Operation and business impact, including whether existing delivery is affected.
  • Time of failure with time zone and the last known successful run.
  • Intended account and resource identifiers, shared only through the appropriate support channel.
  • HTTP method, endpoint path, response status and sanitized error text.
  • Request identifier when the response supplies one.
  • Relevant feature-access status and recent deployment changes.
  • A minimal synthetic payload showing field structure, with authorization headers removed entirely.

Remove cookies, bearer tokens, personal identifiers and unneeded URL parameters from screenshots and logs. Review the attachment itself, not only its filename. A copied terminal session can expose a credential even when the main error message is harmless.

Handle a hypothetical ownership change

Imagine an agency built both a campaign-reporting service and a backend event sender. A new engineer is given access to the ad account and assumes both services now belong to the business. They may still run in the agency's infrastructure.

Inventory each runtime, deployment pipeline, alert destination and secret owner. Agree replacement access with the account administrator, verify the replacement service and retire the old access through the supported process. Record who confirmed continuity. Do not revoke blindly while an undocumented producer is still responsible for live measurement.

If an event count changes after the handoff, inspect occurrence identity and routing using the deduplication test guide. If campaigns themselves stop serving, use the separate delivery troubleshooting workflow. A credential inventory should narrow the investigation, not turn every operational symptom into a key problem.
